Written by Letitia Baldridge, Jackie Kennedy's Chief of Staff
I remember him so fondly from the
Kennedy days. There was never anyone who worked harder at making that
administration effective and human and memorable. He was always there when
something important had been settled and needed communicating. He was always
available when people needed information and answers. He was a
problem-solver for anyone and anything, and along with all that talent and
energy, he was so darned nice!
We all loved him and respected him,
but I'm sure of one thing: he is already greatly loved and respected up,
out, in, wherever heaven is! A lot of people come and go in this city. But
Fred was very special. Far removed from the mediocrity, phoniness and
braggadoccio that covers much of Washington today.
